Garden Plan
It is that time of the year again, time to order my garden seeds. It is only a month from our last frost date and I am running a bit late. I ideally already like to have the seeds in hand by this date so that I can start some inside. When I start thinking about ordering seeds I need to think about what I planted last year. Each year I will plant an old favorite and a bit of a new variety to see how they stand up and some years I get a new favorite. I have to admit I tend to lean toward anything purple. So you will see a lot of purple plants in my selections but I promise that it isn’t just because they are pretty they ar also the best performers I have found.
Lets start with the earlier plants and seeds to go into the garden. If you ar planting potatoes they are the absolute first plants to go in to the ground. Sweet potatoes are the exception, they ar warm weather plants and should non be planted until the ground warms a bit. I plant my onions, shallots (yes shallots can also be planted in the fall), kale, carrots, cabbage and peas first thing when the ground is ready to plant. I love planting shallots because the bulbs like for you to clip the tops back and the shallot tops are awesome thrown in with roasted potatoes straight off the grill. I happily keep those and my chives from my herb garden trimmed because my family absolutely loves broiled potatoes. Corn, radishes, Lettuce, Spinach and beans want the ground to be just a bit warmer so I wait for a night time temperature around 50 or when all risk of frost is over. Heat loving plants like Tomatoes, squash, pumpkins, okra, and cucumbers like to be planted once the ground has had time to warm.
Here is a list of my go to seed and plant vendors. I am non attached in any way with them except being a loyal customer.
Pinetree Garden Seeds
Pinetree is my first choice for seeds because they systematically have the best prices and I have never had trouble with germination of their seeds. They don’t have the largest selection but everything they carry is very reliable.
Territorial Seed Company
Territorial has one of the largest selections of plants and seeds I have found. Their prices ar non bad but their seed and plant quality is top notch. They have a huge selection of medicative plants and herbs which makes them unique and a real gem for me.
Streambank Gardens
Streambank is a relatively new find I found their site last year when looking for a good source of good sauce tomatoes. The plants I got from them grew to be 6 foot monsters with tons of fruit. This year I decided to buy everything I could from them so I got tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and a few of my moldiness have herbs.
A elaborated discussion on my list of moldiness have veggies is coming next.
